TOURS

1  MEDMART / MALL Downtown Cleveland

The Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center, currently under construction, is located one block north of Public Square.  The existing landscaped roof of Mall B has been raised substantially to accommodate 30-foot clear heights in the exhibition halls that will be rebuilt below and to allow a new entrance to the convention facilities on the south side of Lakeside Avenue that extends the full width of Mall B.  New landscaping of the roof over the exhibit halls will reflect the original intent of the Group Plan of 1903 with promenades to the east and west of a new central lawn.  At the north end, an overlook will provide new vantage points for the downtown lakefront and Mall C.  LMN Architects and landscape architects Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd., both of Seattle are lead project designers.  McKnight & Associates of Cleveland has lead the landscape architecture construction documentation and coordination.

2 CLEVELAND CLINIC Allée, Drop-Off, & Vail Garden

The Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, the first major project completed as part of the Cleveland Clinic Masterplan, consists of two main parts, an entry allée and a large circular fountain. The entry allée is created by six concrete reflecting pools flanked by 398 columnar Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Arnold’ trees, which PWP Landscape Architecture individually selected in Georgia and North Carolina. Within the pools sit a grid of 300 hand-picked Wisconsin granite boulders. The trees and boulders act as strong sculptural elements that provide human scale and draw attention to seasonal change in the largest green space on the campus. At the end of the allée sits the centerpiece of the wide circular drop-off and arrival court, an 80-foot-diameter lighted pool made of two clear acrylic circles within rings of black brick pavers and gray granite cobbles. The acrylic walls of the fountain are rounded on top to produce a very slow, elegant movement of water that makes the walls invisible. NBBJ served as the architect of record for the large circular fountain.

3  UPTOWN / MOCA / HEALING GARDEN University Circle

Nearing the end of construction, the Uptown and MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) projects have already made a drastic impact within the University Circle area of Cleveland.  Uptown, designed by Stanley Saitowitz of San Francisco, is a mixed-use development consisting of residential apartments over retail.  The project includes a unique pedestrian alley lined with restaurants and patios.  The hallmark of the overall development is the nearly complete MOCA building design by Farshid Moussavi of London, England.   James Corner, head of Field Operations, has designed  the exterior plazas and associated spaces to uniquely knit the two projects together.

One block away is the newly completed Mary and Al Schneider Healing Garden at University Hospitals. The garden, designed by Virginia Burt of Visionscapes, is an integral part of the new Seidman Cancer Center. The garden creates an experience of respite for cancer patients, staff and families – an “Island” designed to both calm and delight one’s senses in the core of downtown.  Cawrse & Associates developed the construction documentation for this interesting project.

4  PERK PLAZA Downtown Cleveland

Designed by New York-based landscape architectural firm Thomas Balsley Associates and local firm McKnight and Associates, Perk Plaza at Chester Commons has returned to a vital gathering place that supports adjacent restaurants, encourages street-level retail, and provides an important amenity to serve nearby neighborhood residents, workers, and visitors. Located on East 12th Street between Chester and Walnut Avenues, Perk Park serves a diverse population in an area of downtown that has been lacking in well-functioning green space.

Perk Plaza at Chester Commons is a state-of-the-art park that adds an engaging, vibrant public space to the downtown neighborhood. Unique custom seating, a forest of light wands, poetry, greenspace and a striking red trellis define this new park.

5  The Ohio Chapter of ASLA 2012 Annual Gala!
